Hello friends, family, and newcomers. Welcome to or welcome back to my blog where I am documenting the process leading up to and during my first humanitarian mission to Eldoret, Kenya. I have such an exciting update to share with you guys today.

Today, I received the last box of supplies, and I'm thrilled about it. Inject-safe Industries donated 2,000 Inject-safe barrier bandages for our mission. This is a significant contribution, not only for the women in Sub-Saharan Africa whom we will be vaccinating but also for the staff, as these bandages help prevent the transmission of bloodborne pathogens.

The HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccination is crucial in Sub-Saharan Africa. Cervical cancer, a leading cause of death among women in this region, is primarily due to untreated HPV. Vaccination provides essential prevention against HPV for adolescent girls and young women who are most affected. HIV is also widespread among women in these areas. The high prevalence of these diseases stems from numerous factors, other STIs, lack of access to education and healthcare, inadequate prevention programs, poverty, and biological factors. This underscores the importance of our vaccination initiative. Hundreds of young girls and women have been fully vaccinated against HPV, and many have been screened for cervical cancer. We aim to equip the hospital with sufficient resources to continue vaccinating and treating women even when the campaign is not active.

Although these bandages may seem like a minor component, they provide an added advantage by ensuring that no bloodborne pathogens are transmitted between patients and staff. I first learned about a barrier safe bandage when I received my Hep A vaccine. I was immediately intrigued when the physician placed the bandage on my upper arm and injected through it. After the needle was removed, the bandage sealed and functioned as a bandaid. It was simple yet effective. Considering ways to support the mission, I knew I had to attempt to contact the company. I sent them an email, and I was astonished to receive a reply indicating their interest in sending us some. I was even more surprised when they agreed to provide us with 2,000 of them. We are extremely grateful for this generous gift and look forward to utilizing them in this capacity.

Only 9 days remain before we depart for Kenya, and my excitement grows daily. This weekend will be dedicated to packing the bandages and organizing my personal belongings for the journey. Until next time :)

All Love,

Meg
